Ronald Karel, a Turkish native who holds dual French‐Turkish citizenship, is a scientist who has specialized in the links between cloud formation and earthquakes through an interest in meteorology. Though his work was initially difficult for a larger section of the scientific community to accept, other scientists are slowly beginning to point to evidence that may point to a link between earthquakes and cloud formation through a process called air ionization, which is when activation of electronic charge carriers occurs in rocks within the earth crust. These rocks begin to experience higher and higher levels of stress in the buildup to major earthquakes. This has led to a theory still under research, called the Meteoquake theory.
